CVSA’s 2026 International Roadcheck Scheduled for May 12-14, Focus on ELD Tampering and Cargo Securement

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has set May 12-14, 2026, for its annual International Roadcheck, a 72-hour, high-visibility enforcement and inspection blitz across North America. This event targets commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) and drivers to ensure compliance with safety regulations on vehicles, cargo, and driver qualifications.

During the three-day period, certified inspectors at fixed weigh stations, roadside sites, and pop-up locations will primarily perform the North American Standard Level I Inspection—a comprehensive 37-step process divided into driver credentials/operating requirements and vehicle mechanical condition. Driver-side checks include:

  • License, qualifications, medical certificate, seat belt use, and Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse status (U.S.).
  • Record of duty status (logs).
  • Signs of impairment from alcohol or drugs.

Out-of-service violations result in the driver being sidelined from operating the vehicle.Vehicle-side assessments cover critical components such as:

  • Brakes, steering, suspension, tires, wheels, lights, exhaust, fuel systems, frames, couplings, driveline, and wipers.
  • For buses/motorcoaches: emergency exits, seating, and electrical systems.

Vehicles with critical out-of-service violations are immobilized until fixed. Successfully passing a Level I or Level V inspection without critical violations earns a CVSA decal, valid for up to three months, signaling recent compliance. This year’s special emphases highlight high-risk areas:

  • Driver focus: Electronic Logging Device (ELD) tampering, falsification, or manipulation. Inspectors will scrutinize records of duty status for false entries or edits, particularly ELD tampering aimed at hiding hours-of-service violations. Last year, falsified records ranked as the second-most cited driver violation (58,382 cases), with five of the top 10 driver violations tied to hours-of-service or ELDs. Inaccurate entries can stem from misunderstanding rules or intentional concealment.
  • Vehicle focus: Cargo securement. Improper loading risks vehicle instability, load shifts, spills, or falling debris—endangering drivers and the public. In 2025, over 18,000 violations involved unsecured cargo (leaking/spilling/falling), plus 16,000 for unsecured vehicle parts or dunnage.

International Roadcheck, the world’s largest targeted CMV enforcement program, averages nearly 15 inspections per minute continent-wide. Data collected during the event will be analyzed and released later in 2026.

CVSA encourages drivers and carriers to prepare by reviewing ELD compliance, ensuring proper cargo tie-downs, and familiarizing themselves with regulations. Resources, including focus-area flyers, are available at cvsa.org and roadcheck.org.

This initiative underscores ongoing efforts to reduce crashes through education, enforcement, and data-driven safety improvements in the trucking and bus industries across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
