CBSA seizes 1,010 kg of narcotics in three major busts at Alberta’s Coutts border crossing

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers have seized a total of 1,010 kilograms of various narcotics from three commercial trucks at the Coutts port of entry in southern Alberta. The seizures occurred during separate incidents in late 2025, on November 26, December 2, and December 18.

The intercepted drugs included cocaine, methamphetamine, suspected heroin, and dode (opium poppies). In each case, CBSA officers, often assisted by the agency’s Detector Dog Service, identified the contraband during inspections of incoming commercial vehicles.

Key details of the incidents:

  • November 26, 2025: Officers inspected a truck declared to carry electrolyte beverages bound for Calgary. Hidden in the cab, they discovered 461 kg of cocaine, 43 kg of suspected heroin, and a small amount (1 gram) of opium. The driver was arrested on smuggling charges.
  • December 2, 2025: A search of a truck with an empty trailer revealed 300 kg of cocaine and 400 grams of suspected dode concealed in the cab. The driver faced arrest for smuggling.
  • December 18, 2025: During an examination of a truck transporting vacuum parts, officers seized 206 kg of methamphetamine with help from detector dogs. The driver was arrested for smuggling.

In all three cases, the drivers and the seized narcotics were handed over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Federal Policing Northwest Region for further investigation.This series of successful interceptions highlights the ongoing collaboration between the CBSA and the RCMP in combating drug trafficking across Canada’s borders.
